Tournament Results (NEWCA 1)

The Neenah chess team journeyed to Nekoosa on Saturday to participate in the first three rounds of the Northeastern Wisconsin Chess Association 2014-15 season.  After graduating all of its members from the State Championship team in June, the new-look Red team was seeking to prove it is worthy of its predecessor.  With much of the season still to play, the Red team had a statement day, winning all three matches.  The players on boards 3, 4, and 5 combined for 8 wins and 1 draw, contributing in no small part to the team's success.  The red team holds the narrowest possible lead of .5 tiebreaker points over undefeated Waupaca.  The two top teams will meet in Waupaca on January 10th.

Neenah's white team, whose roster is comprised mostly of players who were competing in varsity for the first time, was 0-3 for the day despite several strong individual games.  Neenah's Junior Varsity team features players from Neenah High School as well as a large contingent from both Horace Mann and Shattuck middle schools.  The JV team finished in third place for the day behind Big Falls (second) and Waupaca (first).

Chess Club Getting Underway for 2014/15

The new school year is beginning, and Neenah High School students will have an early opportunity to reinvigorate those chess muscles that may have atrophied during the summer break. As in the past couple of years, chess will begin on the first day of school; Tuesday, September 2nd. Practices will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:20-4:30 and running until Nationals in April. We will meet as usual in the Apollo commons which is in the Armstrong building, just inside door 6.

Middle school chess clubs will begin at Shattuck and Horace Mann around the end of September or early October. Details will be posted in a couple of weeks.

2014 Division I & JV State Champions!

The Neenah High School varsity chess team is the 2014 Division I State Champion, and for the first time since 1993 the championship cup has traveled north of the Milwaukee-Madison line.  The 2014 State Championship was held at the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh on March 22nd and 23rd.  All five varsity players returned to defend last year's co-championship.

Neenah defeated a strong University School of Milwaukee "B" team in the first round on Saturday.  In the second round, Neenah avenged their only 2013 loss by upsetting top-seeded Madison West.  They finished Saturday's play be defeating New Berlin West high school in the third round.

On Sunday morning, Neenah faced the only other undefeated team, Brookfield Academy.  In a hotly contested match that came down to the final seconds, Neenah prevailed to clinch at least another co-championship. Neenah lost its final match to the University School of Milwaukee "A" team but was awarded first place on tiebreakers based on the strength of their opponents.

Neenah High School's junior varsity team won the state JV championship for the fourth straight year, and Neenah schools also competed in the K-8 and K-5 sections.  The K-8 team finished in sixth place.

Tournament Results (NEWCA 5)

On Saturday, February 15th the Neenah chess team traveled to Marion, WI to compete in the final four rounds of their 2013-14 season at Marion High School.  The varsity Red team entered the day with a 1.5 point lead over their host and rival, Marion.  The Red team had defeated Marion in the first series of matches early in the season.  During the mid-season "quick" tournament in which games are played in half the time for half the points, Marion turned the tables and handed Red their only loss of the season.

Neenah started the day strong by defeating Marion in their final match, winning four boards and drawing one.  The Red team clinched the season championship by sweeping their next opponent, but did not ease up.  They won their remaining two matches and finished the day 18-1-1 in individual games.  For the first time, all five members of the Red team took first place on their individual boards en route to earning their 5th consecutive regular season championship.

Meanwhile, Neenah's varsity White team had their best day of the season, winning all four matches, finishing in 5th place for the season.  Neenah's Junior varsity team finished the day in second place behind Waupaca and ended the season in third place due to tiebreakers with Marion, who finished second.  Neenah High School will host the Northeastern Wisconsin Chess Association post-season tournament on Saturday, February 22nd.
